Fines for Non-compliance with MEES
If you don’t follow these rules, you could face fines up to £150,000, property vacancies and a drop in property value.
- For breaches under three months: Up to £5,000 or 10% rateable value – whichever is greater.
- For breaches over three months: Up to £10,000 or 20% rateable value (up to £150,000) – whichever is greater.

Future MEES Updates
As of November 2019, the UK’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is considering changes to MEES.
